Building Trust Between African Community Organisations and the Financial System
Our Stokvels • Our Communities • Our Right to Build Together • Our Ancestors's Inheritance
Lengau People's Society officially introduces its advocacy campaign to promote trust, transparency, mutual respect and constructive engagement between African community organisations and the financial institutions that serve them.
Across our communities, stokvels, societies, cooperatives and community organisations bring people together to save, support families, develop businesses and create economic opportunities.
“These organisations deserve to be understood and assessed on the basis of their actual activities, governance, financial records and verified information.”
We recognise the important responsibilities of banks in preventing fraud, protecting customers and complying with applicable laws and regulations.
We equally believe that when concerns arise about Lengau People's Society or any other community organisation, verified evidence and direct engagement should take precedence over unverified stories and assumptions.
We invite financial institutions to engage with authorised representatives, verify material information and provide appropriate opportunities for clarification, subject to applicable law.
OUR FIVE COMMITMENTS
Trust
Building professional relationships with financial institutions.
Transparency
Maintaining accurate financial records and responsible governance.
Verification
Encouraging evidence-based assessments rather than assumptions.
Respect
Protecting the dignity of legitimate community organisations and their members.
Cooperation
Working together to strengthen financial inclusion and economic development.
THIS IS A CAMPAIGN FOR PARTNERSHIP, NOT HOSTILITY.
We are not asking banks to ignore legitimate concerns. We are calling for responsible verification, constructive dialogue and fair processes.
We want a financial environment where community organisations demonstrate their credibility, banks fulfil their responsibilities, and both parties work together in mutual respect.
“Let us replace misunderstanding with dialogue, assumptions with verification, and unnecessary conflict with cooperation.”
Building a Community-Owned Economy
Our motto: Poverty is our biggest enemy — Together we can defeat it.

We Invite All Stakeholders to the Table
We invite African stokvels, societies, cooperatives, community leaders, banks and financial institutions to participate in constructive dialogue.
OUR CORE PURPOSE
Lengau Smart Money exists to ensure that informal community organisations, including stokvels, societies, savings groups and community-based associations, can access appropriate banking services with dignity, confidence, transparency and fair treatment.
For generations, communities have come together to contribute, save and share money. These traditions demonstrate solidarity, trust and collective responsibility. However, when substantial amounts of members’ money are kept or distributed in unsafe environments without adequate financial safeguards, members may face risks of theft, robbery, fraud, loss of records and disputes.
“Community organisations should not have to choose between preserving their traditions and protecting their money.”
Our vision is to help communities preserve the spirit of collective saving while strengthening financial security through appropriate banking services, good governance and responsible financial management.
THE PROBLEM WE WANT TO ADDRESS
Bridging the communication and compliance divide between formal banks and community organisations.
Community Fears & Frustrations
Some community organisations fear opening or using bank accounts because they worry about unexplained restrictions, poor communication, complicated compliance requirements, inconsistent treatment or difficulty resolving disputes.
These concerns can undermine trust in formal financial institutions and discourage organisations from using services that could help protect their members’ contributions.
Banks’ Regulatory Responsibilities
At the same time, banks have legitimate responsibilities to verify customers, manage financial risks, prevent financial crime and comply with applicable laws.
Without constructive engagement, compliance requirements can feel alienating or arbitrary to grassroots groups who do not operate like traditional registered corporates.
Lengau Smart Money Seeks to Bridge This Divide
We want banks and community organisations to understand one another, communicate effectively and develop practical solutions that protect both the integrity of the financial system and the legitimate interests of ordinary people.
OUR FIVE CAMPAIGN PILLARS
The core foundations driving advocacy, education, security, and dialogue across the financial landscape.
Fair Access to Banking
Advocate for appropriate, accessible banking services for legitimate stokvels, societies, savings groups and community organisations, with requirements proportionate to their activities and risks.
Dignity Without Intimidation
Encourage respectful treatment, clear explanations, accessible compliance procedures and fair opportunities for customers to raise concerns and seek resolution.
Safer Community Savings
Promote the responsible use of formal banking services, secure handling of contributions, transparent records, multiple-authorisation controls where appropriate, and protection against theft, fraud and financial abuse.
Financial Education and Responsibility
Help community leaders and members understand account mandates, recordkeeping, source-of-funds documentation, customer due diligence, transaction monitoring, complaint procedures and their own legal and financial responsibilities.
Constructive Banking Dialogue
Bring banking executives, compliance specialists, financial-sector representatives, community leaders and affected members together through interviews, public discussions and practical educational programmes.
OUR FLAGSHIP QUESTION
Every episode of Lengau Smart Money should help answer:
“How can informal community organisations participate safely and confidently in the formal financial system without facing unnecessary barriers, unfair treatment or fear?
”
RESPONSIBLE MESSAGING & PARTNERSHIP
Both financial institutions and community groups have vital roles to play in building a sound, inclusive economy.
OUR MESSAGE TO BANKS
We recognise the essential role banks play in protecting the financial system and preventing financial crime.
We invite banks to work with community organisations to improve communication, make compliance requirements understandable, apply risk-based procedures fairly and provide appropriate channels for resolving disputes.
Legitimate community savings should be understood, assessed fairly and protected—not automatically treated with suspicion simply because they originate from a stokvel or informal community association.
OUR MESSAGE TO COMMUNITIES
Your money matters. Your dignity matters. Your responsibilities matter.
Community organisations should maintain proper records, follow their account mandates, disclose accurate information, protect members’ contributions and comply with applicable laws.
Do not let fear prevent you from learning about suitable banking services. Understand the requirements, ask questions, keep records and use appropriate complaint channels when problems arise.
OUR GUIDING PRINCIPLE
“Financial regulation and financial inclusion should not be opposing objectives.”
We believe that legitimate community organisations should be able to operate responsibly within the formal financial system without unnecessary exclusion or disproportionate disruption.
OUR CAMPAIGN PROMISE
Lengau Smart Money will promote education, evidence-based discussions, fair representation and constructive engagement. We will distinguish allegations from established facts, respect the responsibilities of financial institutions and advocate for practical solutions that protect community members.
We cannot promise that every account will remain unrestricted or that every dispute will be resolved in a particular way. We can, however, work towards a financial environment in which community organisations understand their responsibilities, know where to seek assistance and are treated fairly through appropriate procedures.
LENGAU SMART MONEY
Bringing Community Savings into a Safer, Fairer Financial Future.
Our Message to Every Saver
“Do not fear the financial system. Understand it, engage with it responsibly and demand fair treatment within it.”
